2. Read and tick True or False — Activity 4 (10 minutes)
Learning goal: Support reading decisions with the text and recognise an ambiguous item.
Task content and materials
Reading:
My name is Peter. It is Thursday today. I have English, PE, music, art and maths at school. My
favourite subject is English. I like it because I want to be an English teacher. I also like music because
I want to be a singer too. I do not like maths because I am not good at it.
Statements: 1. His name is Peter. 2. He has four subjects at school today. 3. His favourite subject is
English. 4. Music is not his favourite subject.
Teacher's Book key: 1 True; 2 False; 3 True; 4 False.
Evidence for 1–3: Peter; five named subjects; My favourite subject is English.
Teaching note on item 4: the text explicitly calls English his favourite and says he also likes music.
The supplied False key does not follow unambiguously from that wording. Do not mark a reasoned
alternative wrong. Clarify with this teacher-adapted question: Does Peter also like music? Yes; he
wants to be a singer. Keep like and favourite distinct.
Teacher's activities Pupils' activities / expected responses
Read item 1 together and underline Peter. Give Choose True, False, True and locate the
pupils time to read and decide items 2–3. supporting words; count five subjects.

the clarification question.
Invite a short reading and ask why Peter likes Answer: He wants to be an English teacher; he is
English and does not like maths. not good at maths. Treat these as Peter's
 statements, not labels for classmates.
Assessment and support: Check evidence for items 1–3 and the clarification question. Do not use
ambiguous item 4 for a right/wrong score.

3. Let's write — Activity 5 (8 minutes)
Learning goal: Complete a personal paragraph with a clear preference and reason.
Task content and materials
Frame:
My name is ____. I have ____ and maths today. My favourite subject is ____. I like it because I want
to be ____. What is your favourite subject?
Teacher's Book example:
My name is Long. I have Vietnamese, art, English and maths today. My favourite subject is maths. I
like it because I want to be a maths teacher. What is your favourite subject?
Use personal information, not Long's facts. Check today's timetable; if maths is not taught today,
replace the whole I have today sentence with the actual subjects. A pupil without a career choice
may use the adapted reason because it is fun, or a clearly labelled fictional role.

subject | Reason. If notes are missing, interview two partners now: What's your favourite subject? Why
do you like it?
Textbook model: Bill | maths | a maths teacher.

teacher.
Teacher-created demonstration data, not class findings: Bill | maths | a maths teacher; Anna | art | a
painter; Mai | music | a singer.
Simulated summary of this demonstration: Two pupils like music. Correction: One pupil likes
music: Mai. Evidence is the three rows. Do not copy these rows into a real survey as if interviews
occurred.
