III. TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Warm-up: Remember the camp phrases (4 minutes)
Learning goal: Retrieve full action phrases for the reading and writing.
Task content and materials
Display these eight phrases for one minute, then cover them:
building a campfire; dancing around the campfire; playing card games; playing tug of war; putting up a 
tent; singing songs; taking a photo; telling a story.
Pairs recall four, then check against the visible list. Award one point per accurate whole phrase, not 
just per noun.

Read and display the phrase list, then cover it. Rehearse the eight phrases and recall four with a 
 partner.
Reveal the list and ask pairs to repair one Check and say the complete phrase.

and Bill are playing card games. Mary and Lucy are singing songs and dancing around the campfire. 
Some other friends are playing tug of war. I am taking a photo. We are having a lot of fun.
Statements:
1 Minh and his friends are at the campsite.
2 Mary and Lucy are playing card games.
3 Some friends are playing tug of war.
4 Minh is taking a photo.
Key: 1 True; 2 False; 3 True; 4 True.
Correction for 2: Mary and Lucy are singing songs and dancing around the campfire. Ben and Bill are 
playing card games.

Opening: Today is Sunday. We are at the campsite.
Questions: What is your teacher doing? What are the boys doing? What are the girls doing? What are 
you doing?

Teacher's guide model:
Today is Sunday. We are at the campsite. Our teacher is taking a photo. The boys are playing tug of 
war. The girls are singing and dancing around the campfire. I am playing cards with some friends. We 
are having a lot of fun.
Support frames: Our teacher is ______. The boys are ______. The girls are ______. I am ______.
Accept different plausible activities from the phrase list. Keep singular is, plural are and I am 
consistent; the model does not prescribe activities by gender.

Use the drawing prepared after the Unit 20 opening lesson. If it is missing, use the textbook project 
picture below or draw three stick figures dancing around a campfire in one minute.
Model for the textbook picture: Look at this picture. They are my friends. They're dancing around the 
campfire.
Alternative pupil-picture model: These are my friends. Two friends are playing card games. One friend 
is taking a photo.
Listener's question: What are they doing? — They're dancing around the campfire.
Show a picture and speak; artistic skill and access to home materials are not assessed.
